The white powder inside other bulbs, called kaolin, is not poisonous to humans but will kill the flowers pretty quickly and is said to be carcinogenic (it also tastes foul so don't do this near food). If you must, remove the powder by pouring a little salt into the bulb and shaking it vigorously. WARNING!!:
